Volunteer Opportunity: Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center

We have a big volunteer project that we’re looking to get help with, and someone here mentioned maybe having police officers volunteer to help out. I wonder if you can point me in the right direction or let me know if this is a possibility.

What we’re planning on is to clear out the old wood mulch around the playscape at the shelter during the week of September 6-11. That’s about 5 days in which to shovel out the wood mulch, wheel barrow it to a trailer, and replace the plastic lining beneath. The area is about 40 X 40 feet, and there is anywhere from 2-6 inches of mulch throughout the playscape.

The reason we’re clearing out the wood mulch is because since 2009 it requires frequent restocking. We received a grant to purchase 13 tons of rubber mulch which will not degrade and need replacing for many years. It will be delivered around September 12.

We’re looking for volunteers to prepare the playground and help spread out a new delivery of rubber mulch around our playground at the shelter. Volunteer groups of 5-10 individuals could pick one day and work from 7am or 8am – 12pm. We will supply water, snacks, gloves and tools. The playground is shaded.

We are also looking for a licensed forklift driver who can bring and operate a 1-ton forklift to bring the pallets of mulch from the parking lot to the playground (about 20 yards distance).

Then, on September 12 we will have the 13 tons of mulch delivered. From Sept. 12-14 we’d like to get a large volunteer group in to spread the mulch around.

If this sounds like something you are interested in doing and can help, please contact Kate Shaw.
