National Police Week: Heroes Live Forever

Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler wishes to acknowledge and thank the men and women of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office especially this week, National Police Week 2020. Sheriff Cutler is very proud of the hard and professional work the officers of the Sheriff’s Office demonstrate each and every day.

With the recent line of duty death of San Marcos Police Officer Justin Putnam, the realization that these officers put their life on the line is all too familiar and much too close to home. Officer Putnam is a hero that made the ultimate sacrifice serving and protecting the community of San Marcos.

National Police Week is from May 10 to May 16 this year. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events that attract thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation’s Capital each year. Unfortunately, vigils and memorial services that are typically well attended have been scaled back or cancelled this year because of Covid-19. Nonetheless, we hope you will join in remembering the fallen officers during this 2020 National Police Week.
